Basimah Dance History
|
I have been
involved with Middle Eastern Dance since I was 17 years old. I
first saw some women dancing at a Renaissance Faire I visited
when I was a little girl and was spell bound by them! I KNEW I
had to learn! Later, I became a member of SCA . There I learned
basic dance moves and zill rhythms from various performers,
which made me thirst for more! Eventually I branched out and
started to take lessons from several Puget Sound area
instructors:
Aleili, an
amazing and graceful dancer and yoga instructor!
Saroya Poirier, an instructor in Des Moines, WA, and member of
the Babylonian Ensemble- the group that coordinates the largest
MED Festival in the Pacific Northwest- Mediterranean Fantasy
Festival.
Saqra is who
I am currently studying with. Saqra is a lively person and has
the greatest sense of humor! Best of all, she has inspired me
and has been instrumental in getting me involved with the local
dance circuit. She invited me to join Raqs el Sehr Shamal (her
Puget Sound area based dance troupe) in 2002, and encouraged me
to dance solo at various venues. Being a large person, this was
a HUGE intimidating step to over come; taking my personal dance
public. However, I am GLAD she pushed me! I am having the time
of my life! |
